ほとんどの日本人にとって、LとRを発音する時の舌の動きを把握するのに、口の断面図を見たり、あるいはネイティブスピーカーの口元を見るだけでは、不充分です。

ReaL Stickは、そんな問題を解消するために、日本人がLとRの音を舌の感触で捕らえることが出来るように考案されました。

まず点字を下に向けて ReaL Stick を持ちます。

次にReaL Stick のＶ字型の谷底に上の前歯が入るような形で口の中に入れ、点字のついている先端部分が上顎に付くように持ちます。

日本語のＲはD/Rと呼ばれていますが、「ラリルレロ」を発音する時は、舌の先端がわずかながら点字に触れます。ほとんどの日本人は、英語のＲを発音する時も、同じように舌が点字に触れてしまいます。もちろんそれは英語のＲではありません。

英語のＲを発音する時は、まず舌を口の後ろの方に丸め、声を出しながら点字に触れないように元に戻します。これが"rink"のような音節始めのＲの発音方法です。音節始めのＲが美しく発音できれば"car"のような音節の終わりに来るＲも簡単に発音できます。

英語のＬを発音する時は、舌の先端をReaL Stick のＶ字の谷と点字の間のツルツルの部分に押しつけます。そして声を出したまま舌をReaL Stick から歯切れ良く離します。これが"link"のような音節始めのLの発音方法です。音節始めのLが美しく発音できれば、"bill"のような音節の終わりに来るLも簡単に発音できます。

日本人がReaL Stick を使ってＬとＲの発音の仕方を一旦覚えてしまうと、ReaL Stickを使わなくても美しく発音できるようになり、一生舌の動きを忘れることはありません。

For most Japanese, it is not enough to see the position of the tongue in the cross section of the mouth or to look at the mouth of native speakers of English to grasp the movement of the tongue for L and R. ReaL Stick has been designed so that they would feel the sounds of L and R on their tongue.

When you put it in your mouth, the upper front teeth touch the bottom of the V shape of ReaL Stick. And the end of ReaL Stick which has braille on the other side touches the palate. You don't need to push it hard against the palate.

Ｔｈｅ Japanese R is called D/R and when Japanese people pronounce the Japanese "ra, ri, ru, re, ro", the tip of the tongue touches the braille slightly. And when they pronounce the Ｅｎｇｌｉｓｈ R, the same thing happens, which, of course, is not R.

To pronounce the English R, you first curl your tongue in your mouth and push it forward without touching the braille. This is how the initial R as in "rink" is pronounced. If Japanese people can do it correctly, their R would be as clear as native speakers' R. And if they can pronounce the initial R beautifully, the final R as in "car", for instance, can be easily pronounced.

To pronounce L, you push the tip of your tongue against the smooth area of ReaL Stick between the valley of the V and the braille and then release the tongue. This is how the initial L as in "link" is pronounced. If Japanese people can do it correctly, their L would be as clear as native speakers' L. And if they can pronounce the initial L beautifully, the final L as in "bill", for instance, can be easily pronounced.

Once Japanese people learn how to pronounce L and R using ReaL Stick, they will be able to pronounce them beautifully without using it and they will never forget the movement of their tongue the rest of their life.

Japan, an economic giant, is an undeveloped country when it comes to English. One of the reasons why it is called so is the poor English pronunciation of the Japanese.
